PEREGRINACION: Pilgrimage to the Villa de Guadalupe Photographs by ABELLEPHOTOGRAPHY (Bonnee and Abraham Elterman) Our Lady of Guadalupe (Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe) is a celebrated 16th-century icon of the Virgin Mary. The image is known as the Virgen de Guadalupe and she is said to have appeared miraculously on a simple peasant’s cloak in December of 1531. The cloak still exists and it is on display in the Basilica of Guadalupe in Mexico City. It is Mexico’s most popular religious and cultural image, and the focus of extensive pilgrimages. She is the symbol of the Protector, Mother and the object of pleadings for favors. It is our hope that these photographs taken in 2008 capture the Mexican devotion to this revered image of the Virgen de Guadalupe. May, 2009
